His first debut EP, Headlights EP, containing four songs that includes the positively reviewed “Midnight” was released in February 2015. Miller was signed to the independent label, Glassnote Records in early 2014 and subsequently dropped out from NYU due to scheduling problems (especially since he played music in a number of NYC venues). He also spent his weekends playing piano at places such as Rockwood Music Hall, The Bitter End, and the burlesque bar, Slipper Room in the East Village. When he was 18 years old, Tor Miller went to New York University, specifically Clive Davis School of Recorded Music. During his high school, he started a pop-punk band. From there, Miller started to develop singing and writing songs. He started to play piano after his parents set up a lesson with a piano teacher who he said to be “a laid-back New Jersey wedding singer”. “Ziggy Stardust, Elton John’s Greatest Hits, and Rumors by Fleetwood Mac, so I just listened to those non-stop, back and forth, all the time.”
To counter the boredom during the long drive, Miller’s mother gave him albums to listen during the commute, including David Bowie, Elton John and Fleetwood Mac, which sparked his interest in music. The most thrilling thing about Tor Miller with the advantage of time is that he might well have found it.Originally from Brooklyn, New York, Miller moved with his mother to New Jersey after a brief separation of his parents, although his school was still located in the city. There s a key moment in prior single Midnight when, with the backing vocals rising to a tumult behind him, Tor sings Calling out, calling out for something true. His music has soul, and his performance has a range, depth and scale. The ongoing glut of actually very good singer-songwriters will never become a fallow stable, but Tor has leap-frogged that pen and positioned himself comfortably on the outside, looking above and beyond its obvious limitations. It s a song I m hugely proud of.Īmbitious, then, but not misplaced. I can hear it on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury as the weekend closes. I wanted it to sound like Bruce Springsteen covering Purple Rain (which he recently did, weirdly enough). I wanted Stampede to end on a what the hell happened there?! moment. A native of Brooklyn, Miller first became interested. Like many great albums do, the album closes on a beauty, and Tor s current favourite called Stampede. Singer/songwriter Tor Miller is a passionate vocalist with a knack for writing lyrical, literate songs.
